25 March 1875 — Madrid
Thursday. 25th [March 1875]. Carretero was buried this morning at 9 & we sent the carriage. At 10 all carriages were prohibited– To day the King washed the feet of the poor & served them at table. We were invited but excused ourselves on the plea of the differences of religion. We were going to the Consejo de Estado to see the King & Infanta pass in procession to visit the 7 churches on foot but Ruiz Gomez told me all the fine ladies were going there so I preferred to go to Weisweillers house. We took the Phipps & Clarita with us & the Bauer children were also there. Mrs P. was furious at not seeing better & not being at the fashionable Consejo & was very rude. We saw Mme Koudriaffsky pass in a sedan chair from the ceremonies of the Palace– After the King had passed we took Clarita & tried to go up the Calle Arenal to the Bordadores but the crowd was so great that we lost Clarita but got at last to Mrs Mitchell’s who has appartments tho’ her grain’s shop is in the Costanitta de los Angeles. We saw the procession very well. First came all the grooms & postillions with whips in their hands & the coachmen & footmen—& then the household – After then the Governor of Madrid & then the King in uniform & the Infanta in grey with a white mantilla & long gown & with her 3 ladies. When they had gone by Mrs Mitchell gave us some tea & we walked home. Just after we got home we saw the procession under the charge of the Encarnacion opposite us. In the evening we went to the Bauers.
