26 March 1875 — Madrid | |
Friday. 26th Good Friday [March 1875]. We went to the Broutelles at the Fonda de Londres to see the Procession pass. It was a horrid sight & the wooden figure of Our Saviour wh was carried in a glass coffin was covered with a while blonde veil. A large figure of Him carrying the cross was carried by the Duke of Medinacelis servants in gala liveries. The figure has long flowing hair wh the grandmother of the present Duke cut off her own head & gave for this image. The Duke who is abt 21 walked with it carrying a tassio. There was a great crowd of people who uncovered the themselves & all the women crossed themselves when the image of the Virgin in black was carried by. | |
