23 April 1875 — Madrid
Friday. 23rd [April 1875]. At 1 Mr Aylton & Bernadine called. At 3 there was a grand function at the Senate in honor of Cervantes– Emilia came to see the King go there & Bernadine sent for Mme A & Louise to come to see it. There was a band playing all the time outside the building. Emilia & I played duetts on piano & harmonium & at 5 we had tea & I then took her home. It was a dull day & a little rain fell. I went to see Mrs Hamilton who has changed her house—& afterwards to see Css Montijo & also found her in & sat with her a little while. She told me the reason the Kings of Spain always went to the Salve at the Atocha on Saturdays was a vow made by one of the King’s of Spain in the time of some great plague– If the Virgin would stop the plague the King wd always go to the Salve.
