20 May 1875 — Madrid
Thursday. 20th [May 1875]. I took Lady Walsham out driving & also Emilia Riaño. They dined with us & after dinner Henry took Sir J. to Serranos. I had taken Lady W. to see the Dss in the day time so we stayed at home. Mr Hunt also dined. Before Henry & Sir J returned & just after Emilia had left as Lady W. Mr Hunt & I sat talking with a window open on acct of the heat. We were startled by a bright light & then a loud report wh sent Lady W. flying out of her chair– It proved to be a bomb let off on the steps of the Convent of the Encarnacion in order to alarm a meeting wh was being held at the Senate close by, of Sr Canovas’ supporters. Of course all the guardias began to run but caught no one & there had been no damage done.
