19 July 1875 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 19th [July 1875]. Went to bathe. After breakfast had a visit from the Abate Lanetti of Murano who brought me some lace on sale. At 2 we went out & met D. Salviati & Sr Castellani & went to see the studio of Toso a wood carver. Saw nothing we cared for—he had mostly figures of niger slaves, monkeys, dwarfs & demons wh are the high fashion now in Paris. I went to paint in the Ct yard with R. Madrazo. Came home & painted on the balcony. The Fratelli Malcolm dined with us & then we went to Piazza where we met them again. Old Smallwood H.M. V. Consul joined us & was in a state as an English man who married a german lady at the Consulate less than a month ago was accused of starving & illtreating his bride—the accused Mr Montgomery Campbell has been married 3 or 4 times & bares anything but a pleasant character.
