6 September 1875 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 6th [September 1875]. I tryed to sketch in the morng but had to give it up having such a bad headache. Henry & Alice had to cocker me up in order to make me fit to go to lunch at Holmbury Mr Leveson Gower’s. We found Lady Marian Alford there & she was very kind & gave me things to try & cure me. Sir & Lady James were there at luncheon. He is a queer looking mass of fat. She is a comfortable nice looking old dame. Sir Henry Cole sat next me at lunch. He was in the best of spirits. After lunch we went on to Shere to see Mrs Grote & found Lady Eastlake there & Miss Lewin who lives with her aunt Mrs Grote. We had tea in the garden. Mrs Grote was looking wonderfully well but complained of being failing– After I had gone to get in the carriage she embraced Henry. We got home rather late for dinner—a Mr & Mrs dined at Milton. He is a gentleman farmer & both are very nice. I was obliged to go to bed directly after dinner as my head was so bad.
