12 September 1875 — Langham House, Portland Place
Sunday. 12th [September 1875]. I went to church at Margaret St intending to stay to the Communion. There was a very short service—then a sermon & not a bad one. After it the bell rang & a gt many people went away as did the clergyman & the choir. A great many people came in & amongst others some sisters of mercy dressed like R.Cs who bowed as they passed the middle of the church & crossed themselves. Presently the choir returned in procession & the organ struck up– A boy began to sing & I stood up & beheld to my horror three clergymen with their backs turned & standing on the steps of the Table in green & red vestments. At this I rose up hastily & went home for I cd bear it no longer. One did not recognise the church at all to be a Protestant one. After lunch Henry & I went down to Blackheath to see Grannie once more & we stayed with her till after 5 & returned to Langham House to dinner. Went to bed early.
