22 September 1875 — Santander
Wednesday. 22nd [September 1875]. We remained on board & made preparations to start for Madrid. Consul March came on board & Henry asked him to secure our reserved carriage. Mr Riaño went with him—& he said to Capt. Palliser that as Mr R was going to the station he might as well have saved him all trouble—to wh Capt P. said he thought March ought to be too pleased to do something to earn his pay! When Mr M. returned on board he begged to take leave of us at once as he was so busy. Mr Saint Martin then came & promised us his carriage to go to the station. We landed abt 1 & went to M. S. Martin’s home where we found Mlle Berthe ready to accompany us. We left by 1.40 train the heat was tremendous. I had a head ache & cd not eat my dinner when we got to Reinosa so I made some tea & went to sleep & the Riaños retired to their coupé.
