21 September 1875 — Bilbao
Tuesday. 21st September [1875]. When I got up & had breakfast I went in search of Emilia & found that she had already been out & found some “garegas”. So after she had breakfasted we left Henry with a Deputation of English & went prowling. We found 4 silver repoussé Marcelinas for holding cups & each bought a pair– We walked round the town & sauntered till past 12 when Henry, Capt. Palliser & I went to lunch with the Consul. It was excessively hot walking in the sun. We had an excellent lunch at Mr Youngs house at the gates of the town & from there we could see the Carlist forts well. There was a guard at the gate but they seemed to do little else but levy blackmail on the peasants who brought in provisions. After lunch we went down to the river & Henry & I & Mr Y went in the Captns boat to see the English Cemetery but it was locked & we cd not get in. We landed Mr Young to go in the carriage & took Emilia in the boat the rest of the way till we got to the “Lively.” We had great amusement watching some troops going up a hill in skirmishing order to relieve guard at one of the forts. There were also a few shots fired from the forts. We left Portugalete abt 4 o’clock & had a lovely voyage to Santander & I was able to dine at table. Emilia preferred to remain on deck. As it got dark we got near Santander & fired a gun for a pilot. As none came rockets were sent up & all in vain. So the Captn determined to go in alone as soon as the moon rose wh we did & anchored in the harbour but we did not land.
