20 September 1875 — Bayonne
Monday. 20th [September 1875]. At 5 in the morng we left Bayonne & so when I got up we were already on our way to Bilbao. We had a perfectly calm journey & abt 4 o’cl we got to Bilbao & were able to get over the bar into the River & were soon met by the Consul Mr Young. Landed & drove into the town. As we neared Bilbao on the coast near Bermeo 2 shots were fired at us from a Carlist fort but we were luckily out of their range. There was firing to be heard on the heights abt Bilbao when we landed. We went to the Hotel Antonia—very clean & good—the best I have seen in Spain. We were waited on at dinner by 2 girls not bad looking. After dinner, the Riaños, Consul Young & Capt. Palliser dined, we left Henry & the Consul & took a walk in the dark & sat by the river till abt 10 then came in & went to bed.
