14 November 1875 — Madrid
Sunday. 14th November [1875]. Dr Brehm came & prescribed for me. It was a lovely day & quite warm. I wrote to Adeline. Recd letters from Maria & Ivor. At 3.30 I went in the brougham to meet Henry at the Walshams– Saw Lady W. & sat with her till Mme Koudriaffsky called. Heard that Ct Casa Valencia (Visct Ponton) had suddenly gone out of his mind & he’s in a dangerous state. He was named Min: of F.A. in Septr at the last change of Ministry & was not up to the business. He entirely forgot that Henry had asked for an audience of K. Alfonso wh was the reason Henry did not see him till abt a month after our return here. He is one of the nicest men of Madrid & everybody is very sorry. He was married to Miss Osma in July & his wife is in an interesting condition & very ailing. The Castros (Late Min. for F.A.), M. & Mme D’antas, Conde de Coello, Greppi, Sir J. Walsham dined with us. The Castros mistook the dinner hour & arrived before 7 o’cl! & we were neither of us dressed.
