3 December 1875 — Madrid
Friday. 3rd December [1875]. Painted all the morng. At 2.30 went to see Mrs Phipps who is laid up with rheumatism in her side then fetched Emilia & we went shopping. She bought a silk for wh they asked 50rs the bara—ultimately at 36rs! We went to Lady Walshams & met Mme d’Antas & Clarita there. Home by 5. We went to the Bauers in the eveng & found them in a state as their oldest boy Gustave has scarlet fever—but favourably. The Ministerial crisis is over & Canovas del Castillo becomes President of the Council again. Collantes Foreign Affairs & Count de Serrano Fomento– Henry went to see Collantes today & he told him that the King being informed of the reason I was not at Court had ordered a cover of iron & glass to be erected for the Corps Dip: to drive under when we went to Court so we have triumphed. There is great dissatisfaction at the Basamanos of Sunday. The King sat on his throne & the ladies of the Infanta stood. All the Constitutionals are furious at their reception & vow not to go to the Levée again. They compare the K. on his throne to an idol on an altar. It certainly is not the way things are done in 19th century.
