2 December 1875 — Madrid
Thursday. 2nd [December 1875]. Found everything white with snow when we got up but the snow had nearly disappeared before the end of the day. Painted. Drove out in the afternoon to see Marquesa Calderon de la Barca but she was in waiting on the Infanta so I could not see her. Found the Marquesa de Novaliches at home—but was evidently let in by mistake. Was shown into a small room poorly furnished where the Marquesa was sewing white work. I told her my name & she spoke to me in very bad french & was so silent that it became infectious & I cd hardly keep up the conversation & after some time she remarked Il fait beaucoup de froid” & I thought I had done eno. She is a woman of abt 50 who may have been pretty & is one of the great ladies at Court. I went to the Walshams & met Henry & we came home together.
