6 January 1876 — Madrid
Thursday. 6th [January 1876]. Went out at 10 & fetched Emilia. We went to Bach’s, Durau’s, Prast’s & a toyshop to buy things for the tree. I came home for breakfast at 12. After breakfast Mr Sartoris came up from the Chancery & we began putting things on the tree– Later Emilia joined us. At 5 we rested & had tea & then returned to the charge– Ida Bauer came to say she thought her children ought not to come on acct of Gustave being still in convalescence from scarlatina. I persuaded her she was over scrupulous. At 6 we had finished the tree & Emilia & Mr S departed. Henry went to the Bauers & I to bed–
