Friday. 7th [January 1876]. Finished arranging the tree with Mr Sartoris– Put on all the tapers, arranged & tidyed up. At 4 o’clock the children began to arrive—4 Pollacks, 3 Bauers, 3 Salms, 3 Brehms, 5 Ojedas, 6 Morets, 4 Hamiltons, 5 Serranos, 1 Prim, 3 Coronas, 2 Walshams, 2 Bernars, 1 Estrada, 1 Gaminde, 2 Poix. Making 45 in all. We first made them go to tea & while they took in unlimited bread & butter cake & meringues Mr Sartoris & I lit up the tree & Giovanni lit the Chinese lanterns & the door was unlocked & the children let in. There was an abundance of every thing & each child had 5 or 6 trifles. Afterwards Mr Sartoris & Mr Phipps took it by turns to play the piano & the children danced & by 6.30 they had all gone home & I began to rest. We dined after 8 o’cl: & went early to bed. | |
