13 January 1876 — Madrid
Thursday. 13th [January 1876]. Brehm payed us a visit– It began to thaw a little & we could go out driving. Tried the new horse we had bought yesterday. We went out driving at 3. The Calle Mayor was pretty clear of snow—they were beginning to clear away the snow—brushing & turning on water– But in the Recolletos & Fuente Castellana it was deep in snow & not easy to get along. We managed to get up to the Walshams & met them walking so they turned back & we went in to their house—but Henry suddenly was taken with his fever & we hurried home. The Riaños called & later Mr Sartoris. Snowed all night.
