25 February 1876 — Madrid
Friday. 25th [February 1876]. Painted all the morning. At 3 dressed & went to the Bauers to see the bal costumé for children wh they gave. The most attractive of all was the little child of the Gigenas of abt 3 years old who was got up as the Marguarite of Faust with a trailing white cashmir frock, a wig in order to give her 2 plaits & a white prayer book wh she always pretended to be reading– The children all danced for some time & then there was a Punch & Judy for them to see. I held up little Manolo Bauer to see it & he stayed with me most of the afternoon. When Punch was over there was a dinner for the children, soup, cold meat, tea &c & then a lottery & each child got something to take home. The Bernars took me home & I was only just in time for dinner. I was so tired that I went early to bed.
