1 April 1876 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 1st April [1876]. Lesson of Esquivel in wh Nelly joined. Mr & Mrs Birch called to take leave of us. I was glad to get rid of them as I had a model who came to sit for me to do his portrait for an hour. He settled to return on Monday. I went to call on Mme Greindl & found her on her sofa. Called on Dss de la Torre & saw her also. In the eveng we went for a great party given at the Presidencia to the Ladies of the Red Cross. It was just the same as it used to be in the Serranos’ time only the company was different. The ladies sat round the room & the gentlemen herded together in the middle of the room. The ladies of the + were at once armed into a corner by Canovas. We stayed a very short time & from there went on to Css Hatzfeldt’s where we found very few people & did not stay long as Henry’s cold was bad. | |
