23 April 1876 — Madrid
Sunday. 23rd [April 1876]. Mr Sartoris returned from Seville & brought letters for Henry from the Prince. I did not go to church. Went in fact with Jacinta to the Bauers to tell them we had settled to give a dance for the Prince & if so we must furnish the lower floor of the house—& to beg them to see if they could lend us some tapestry. I had to hurry home & dress to go to the concert. Mr Hunts symphony was played. It was a success for a first composition, the Menuet was encored. The Walshams & Phipps came to our box. After concert we went home as Henry expected Morphy, Hatzfeldt came to tea & the Riaños. When Morphy came he said the King wished to dine with us but that we must invite him thro’ the Ministers. Henry sent Sir J. Walsham to Calderon Collantes who accepted for HM. Mme la Romana, her daughter, Mme Calderon de la Barca dined with us. We went with the Walshams to the Bauers for an hour to talk over our arrangements for this week.
