4 July 1876 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 4th [July 1876]. We went to bathe & when we came home we had only a short time to rest & breakfasted at 11 & went by 12.55 train to Padua wh took abt an hour to reach. We drove to the Arena chapel painted by Giotto & the Eremitani church wh is close to it—then to the Santo wh is very beautiful. We drove next to Sta Justina to see the great Romanisco but we found it had been moved to the Museum. Then to the town hall wh is very grand. We found that the Museum had been moved from that building & was now near the Eremitani so as we cd not go back we gave up seeing it & went to Cafe Pedritti to refresh before going back to the station. We took the 5.20 train for Stanghella—passed thro’ pretty country—Battaglia & Este & Sedico the latter has all fortifications on the hill above it & is very picturesque. At Stanghella there was the Pisani carriage & another couple besides ourselves going to Vescovana the Military commander of Padua & his wife Genl & Css Poninsky. Abt ¼ hours drive to Vescovana– A long low house close to the road. On the 1st floor there is a long gallery wh occupies all the middle & there are wings right & left of it. The gallery is very tastefully fitted up with every kind of knicknack from every country—divans &c &c & all looks comfortable & shows refinement. We dined at 7 or soon after. In the eveng we sat under the veranda & had coffee. At 9 they lighted Bengal lights in different parts of the garden & we walked abt by moonlight. Went to bed abt 10.30.
