8 August 1876 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 8th [August 1876]. Spent all the morning in the church with Ivor, Mr Clark & Henry & Mr Damer looking at the chancery wh has been done up & consulting abt the doing up of the body of the church. We poked about & I found a small niche wh had been the piscina & outside we found something that looked like a niche so after lunch Ivor & I went & worked away & found a curious hole wh communicated with the niche inside– Mr Clark said it was where the scaffold poles had been when the church was built—it was rather a disappointment. I drove with Cornelia & Ivan in the pony carriage & the large carriage followed with Kate, the French governess Francie, Corise & Elaine & Adeline & Mr Clark on the box. We went to Parkstone sandbanks & had tea on the shore—& made a fire down on the sand. As we were carrying our things back to the carriage we met a tall thin gentleman who said he hoped if we wanted any water to make tea we wd go to his house for it. I recognised SGO Lord Sydney Godolphin Osborne who lives in a small house called the Hive. So Cornelia & I introduced ourselves to him & we had some talk with him. Cornelia & Adeline left in the pony carriage to make a call in the Parkstone before going home. So Kate, Mlle & I went with the 3 little girls & Ivan & Mr Clark on the box home in the barouche. We got home after 8 & the others came after us.
