21 August 1876 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Monday. 21st [August 1876]. Dr Hooker & the Poynters left. Car Churchill came over to lunch & as she was not expected had to walk up from the station. She sat & rested in my rooms after lunch & we had a long chat. At 3.30 I went with her in the pony carriage to the station & was to bring back Buckland who was expected by that train. He did not turn up & sent word that he was prevented by business. Went back to pond where the Squire expected me to fish. Caught nothing but gudgeon– After dinner there was whist & music. I sang a good deal to Messrs Fergusson & Burton.
