9 September 1876 — Blackheath
Saturday. 9th [September 1876]. Got a telegram at breakfast to say that Blanche was confined this morning– As we were going by 2 train to town to go down to stay with Mrs Rate at Dorking Henry & I arranged to go at 1 & go to Ham: House: to see B’s daughter. We walked to the station & sent down our luggage early as at 1 there wd be much confusion as Gladstone was to hold a meeting in Blackheath abt the Bulgarian atrocities. We met trains full of men going to the meeting as we went up. I saw Blanches baby who is very pretty—with pretty ear & hand. I was not allowed to see Blanche– I went on afterwards to Garlants hotel to see my mother who was ill in bed with a bilious attack—& then we went on to Charing X. Hill came there but in the confusion the luggage had remained at Cannon St. We found it there all right. We got to Dorking at 4.50. Found Alice & little Ida & the boy had just returned from Brighton.
