11 September 1876 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 11th September [1876]. The boy was moved to Alice’s room but he was not better. We tryed to paint a sunflower in water colours. Alice drove us over to Mrs Grotes after luncheon & we found her at home with her niece Miss Lewin—very cheerful & wonderfully well, vigourous & talkative– She kissed us both & seemed right glad to see us, talked politics, the Eastern question, “Bulgarian atrocities” with Henry. We had tea with her wh she said was a bad habit & only slop. We stayed about an hour & then drove on to the house the Arthur Russells have hired wh belongs to Mr Clay. The A. Rs were away but we went in to see the house & the children & got Alice some sal volatile as she was faint & done up after her bad night. We got home about 7. The boy did not seem any better & Alice rather anxious.
