13 September 1876 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Wednesday. 13th [September 1876]. Seeing that the boy was seriously ill & Mr Rate was away we made up our minds to give up returning to Bkheath today & only went up to town to see Blanche. We went by 11.15 train & Henry took me to Ham: Hse & I sat with Blanche a little while. She was well but looked pale, delicate & thin. Henry & I lunched with Edward & then Blanche would see Henry for a moment to beg him to be godfather to the baby whom they talk of calling “Guinivere.” After lunch I walked with Edward to buy some books for Lachie Rate & as it began to rain we took a cab to go to Garlants’ hotel where I had to see Mama & meet Henry. Found the M. better but not quite recovered her violent bilious attach. We returned to Milton by 4.51 train. Found that Dr West had been– Had thought it a grave case—had changed Clark’s medicine & promised to come again tomorrow. The boy has decidedly inflammation of the lungs– Mr Rate was telegraphed for– Hill has helped to nurse him since last night. I advised Alice to write to West to send a nurse. I made Alice go to bed directly after dinner & let me & Hill nurse the boy till 2– The childs breathing was very bad but he had morphine to make him sleep. At 1. Alice got up & I went to bed. At 6 Hill came & called me up to go to Alice as the boy was worse. They had sent for Clarke at 4 & he was much alarmed & had stopped in the house & was resting till 7. I found Alice looking scared by the sleeping child– She told me she was sure he was dying & that there was no hope but in prayer– I left her kneeling—& sat & waited—gave her tea– Dr Clarke got up at 7 & thought the child slightly better & Alice was a little reassured. Alice telegraphed for Mr Armytage to come in case she wished the boy’s portrait done—but it was not allowed so he merely gave the girls a lesson. Henry went up to town. Dr West came at 2 (Thurs. 14th) & pronounced the child a good deal better & gave great hopes. Henry returned from town early to play lawn tennis with the girls. I made Alice put on her things & take a walk round the garden to refresh her– Mr Atkinson came to call to ask after Lackie. News from Mr Rate that he will be here tomorrow– The nurse arrived from town this morning so Hill & she propose to nurse the child tonight & Alice & I are to go to bed– Lachie a good deal better in the eveng.
