17 September 1876 — Blackheath
Sunday. 17th [September 1876]. I went to their chapel of care & sat with Miss Berkeley. She walked home with me after church. Mrs Burr came down to lunch & spend the afternoon with us. We had a thunderstorm after lunch & had to come in from walking in the garden & it rained heavily. Sat in the study talking with Mrs Burr. She left at a little after 5. Mr Phipps made his appearance just as she was going & offered Mrs B the use of his cab to go to the station wh she accepted & Henry went with her. Mr Phipps had come to ask Henry if he might delay his return to Madrid altho’ the F.O. had ordered him out at once. He said Mrs Phipps was delicate & expects another baby this winter. He only stayed an hour & then went off & we remained alone for the rest of the eveng.
