3 December 1876 — Madrid
Sunday. 3rd [December 1876]. Went to church morning & afternoon. Henry went to the Quatuor Concert. At afternoon prayers there were more people than usual & there were the 2 governesses Miss Blake & Miss Clara whom the R-C are trying to win over. Mr Dawson kept them & talked to them & finding the former had not been baptized he made her promised to have it done. Then a long talk after with Clara on religion & lent her books. Mme Montebellos baby came with its English nurse to see me. After the morng service we brought up old Fitch to breakfast so he was at afternoon service. The Phipps, Daw: Ken: Ruiz Gomez & Lindstrand dined with us. The P’s came late & we sat down without them. Henry told the secs he wish them to attend M. Aylton’s funeral– He died last night– Mrs P. at once objected & said she did not see why Phipps shd go—at wh Henry begged her to be silent & not to interfere–
