12 December 1876 — Madrid
Tuesday. 12th [December 1876]. Emilia Riaño came for me at 10 & we took a walk poking about for old books & doing various commissions. Came home to breakfast at 11.30. Painted. At 3 drove out & met Henry in the Recolletos & we went to call on Mme Buschenthal—& found there a lady whom I at once imagined must be Mme Ratazzi. She wore a black velvet skirt an incroyable black cut velvet jacket with yellow stars appearing thro’—a white satin waistcoat embroidered with coloured flowers—a bonnet all velvet & feathers—her hair dyed & crimped & her face a mass of paint; Mme Buschenthal would talk Spanish all the time & after a ¼ hour we escaped– Mme B. accompanied me to the door & was most civil. We went on to call on Css Montijo & found her in—ailing & with a cough– She was full of the procés she had gained against the French newspapers wh said the Emp. Eugenie was an illegitimate child– There was there a Sr Barza an officer calling at the same time. Had rather a headache in the eveng. Played backgammon–
