27 March 1877 — Cadiz
Tuesday. 27th [March 1877]. We started by the early (5 AM) train & it was cold & dark. We went to Cordova & slept there arriving abt 2. Found Mr Rutledge ill in bed. On arriving at the Seville junction we were met by Mr Macpherson who gave us a “Times.” In it we saw the announcement of the death of “Milord” my poor old imbecile uncle. One did not regret him but one felt a link of ones youth was gone. Duncan Shaw came to see us, brought me flowers & invited us to dinner but we excused ourselves– Dined & went early to bed.
