3 April 1877 — Madrid
Tuesday. 3rd [April 1877]. Emilia came early & we worked together to put away, lock up & pack up. At 1 her husband & father came to fetch her & to bid us good bye wh was the hardest parting I had to bear as Emilia & I are fast friends. She has always been so kind & devoted to me. R. Gomez also came to say goodbye. The Dss of Fernan Nunez & Mariquilla both came during the morng to take leave of me & at 3 just as we were getting into the carriage to go to the station Mme Osma & her daughter came & had only time to speak to us before we drove off. At the station we were met by many friends viz. Bauers, Weil, Nicolas, Esquivel, Pavia, Escobar, Ojeda, Montesinos & nearly all the Corps Diplomatique. We were very tired & glad to be well off, & Henry was very unwell with a bad cold. The Phipps also left for Biarritz by the same train & when we supped at Reinosa. Henry had tea in the saloon carriage & I & Mr Phipps went to the table d’hôte. It had been very hot when we left Madrid & it rained as we went North travelling all night.
