7 April 1877 — Hamilton House
Saturday. 7th April [1877]. Adeline came early to see me. As did Monty. Monty took me into the city in a hansom to do a little shopping but we found places closing or closed. At 5 I went to Thomas’ Hotel to call on Lady Elliot & to hear from her all about the Embassy at Constantinople. She was kind eno’ to give me many hints & to offer to let us take her servants who still remain there. I then went on to call on Lady Hammond & both she & Ld Hammond received us very affectionately & were very kind. I met Henry there & brought him home. We dont yet know when we are to start—some say Tuesday but Ld Derby is out of town.
