9 January 1878 — Constantinople
Wednesday. 9th [January 1878]. Wrote a few letters for the post. Mrs Parnis & girls came & we cut out garments. I played tennis with Henry, Mr Smijth & Arthur. The Mavrocordatos & Simmons called– We dined at 7.15. After dinner Mrs de Winton & I went in chairs to the Teutonia to be present at the Christmas Tree given by the Dorcas Society. We stayed there 1½ hour. It was very hot & noisy as the numbers of the prizes were roared out from the stage. Comic songs &c were sung at intervals– There was also tea & some small lotteries. We started one & then went home. I had taken Jerry who was supremely happy. Had tea & went to bed. News of the death of the King of Italy.
