10 January 1878 — Constantinople
Thursday. 10th [January 1878]. I was in bed nearly all day with a headache. News came that the Shipka army had been taken by the Russians—in all 15 or 20,000. In the afternoon Mrs H. & Mrs W. Hanson came to see me & with Mrs de Winton sat a long time with me—I on the sofa. Arthur had Mr H. Hanson to talk to. Went to the Dorcas Concert in the eveng in chair with Mrs de Winton & Mr Jocelyn & Kennedy. Dined at 7. The Genl & Henry, Arthur & Kennedy dined. The Concert was very full– I sat with the Hansons & d’Ehrenhoff. Very good music & singing– The overture to Dinorah &c. A Mme Livadari sang—an Italian lady. Between the acts I retired into a small room where lemonade was given us & after all was over the director & Mme Livadari came & were introduced to me. A wet evening–
