5 March 1878 — Constantinople | |
Tuesday. 5th March [1878]. Henry got up very early & went off to Stamboul to see Ahmed Vefyk P. & came back just as I had breakfasted. I played lawn tennis in the court. Dined alone in my boudoir at 7. After dinner Dr Dickson looked in for a little while. The Genl dined at the Porte a dinner given to Genl Grant, Henry went to Yildiz & dined en brie with the Sultan & Said. The Sultan sent me by Henry a lovely jade cup & vase beautifully carved. The spout of the jug set in rubies—& a cup of green jade with a gold setting. He said they were old & had been a long time in the Palace. | |
