28 March 1878 — Constantinople
Thursday. 28th March [1878]. Henry had a very bad cold & having taken a lot a stuff for it amongst wh was ipecac woke very sick & had to breakfast in bed. But he was obliged to get up as Said P. wrote to say the Sultan wished to see him & begged him to come with the bearer of the note (Osman Effendi) to the Sultan’s mother’s house so he had to get up & go. In the afternoon Ahmet Vefyk P. called & was in pretty good spirits. We went to dine at the French Ambassador’s neither of us feeling very well. I was taken to dinner by Fournier & P. Reuss sat next to me. Good food but badly served. They were in great distress about their maid who is dangerously ill with small pox. We did not stay late.
