8 April 1878 — Constantinople
Monday. 8th [April 1878]. Mrs de Winton came & sat in my room in the morning. The Dorcas meeting was held here & as it was so fine we held it in the garden. Afterwards walking up & down with Henry. Had a great dinner for the Turks. Raouf P. Saïd (Min: of Marine), Mukhtar P. Mehemed Ali P. Osman P. Kabri P. Hassan & his ADC Mr Zorab, Serkis Effendi, Mr Sandison & Marinitch. Just before dinner an ADC came from the Sultan to fetch Said P. and he was in a great way at having to go without his dinner when it struck him he could very well send the ADC to Yildiz to fetch him his carriage & in the meantime he could dine. This he did & we sat down to dinner without Osman P. who arrived late. He does not speak a word of French and looked rather gené. He is a bronzed stern looking man. He has a peculiarly long body & short legs—so that when sitting he looks very tall & is not really so. They smoked after dinner & later Mukhtar & Mehemed Ali came in to tea & the latter was very entertaining. He said he could write novels from what he had heard from various Greek brigands he had taken in former days.
