20 May 1878 — Therapia | |
Monday. 20th [May 1878]. Went off in the Antelope mouche at 10 with Henry & Jerry & he dropped us at Candilli & I went to see Mrs Arthur Hanson. Saw Mr Bartlett for the first time since his illness. He looks well but walks with a stick on acct of rheumatic legs. After lunch we went up to the Henry Hansons & played lawn tennis, Mrs Henry, Mrs Arthur, Mr Seymour & myself & then had T in the arbour. At 4 they came to tell me that the mouche had come to fetch me. Instead of going over to Ahmet Vefyk’s as I expected to have to do, I found Henry in the mouche & we went home. He said Ah. Vefyk had moved up to his country house & he cd not go up the hill—that there had been a revolution in town & that a lot of refugees had attacked the Sultan’s Palace & had wanted to proclaim Sultan Murad & that no boats were allowed to approach the Palaces. There were soon all kinds of wonderful stories & a panic but when Mr Sandison came he said all was quiet & it turned out that it had been a certain Ali Suave at the head of 2000 refugees who did not even know what they were doing had gone to Cheragan Palace & asked to see the Sultan & on the sentinel refusing to let them in they fired, killed the sentinel & got into the garden. There they proclaimed Murad Sultan & the guard coming in upon them a fight ensued & abt 30 killed & wounded. All the insurgents being armed with revolvers. The rest were taken prisoners– Capt. Stopford, Mr Ash & Ken: & Sandison dined with us. Fine hot summer’s day– | |
