3 June 1878 — Therapia
Monday. 3rd June [1878]. At 7.30 a.m. Fournier came to fetch me to go for a picnic with them. We were some time getting on board the Petrel & had at last to go over to Beikos & then were nearly an hour before she could be got off as something had happened to the engines. It was blowing hard & raining a little when we started. We got to Prinkipo abt 10 & having had previously a little tea & cake, landed. There were carriages & donkeys for hire. The donkey people rushed at us & nearly smothered us with their efforts to get us to hire them so Mme Fournier & I jumped into a carriage & at last the others managed to mount. We drove to the Greek convent of St George. Abt ½ way there I found that a donkey had followed for me so I got out of the carriage & rode. At the convent we took “locum” & water & saw the old dirty convent wh was like a barn with a dirty smoky old church—& then we rode off & returned to our boats by another road so that we rode right round the island. Luckily tho’ fine there was no sun. As soon as we got on board (abt 2) we lunched in a place rigged up on deck & had a splendid repast wh lasted an hour & then set off home where we arrived at abt 6.30. Henry came home from town in the steam cutter at the same time & as we landed gave us the news that the Emperor of Germany had again been shot at & had been wounded in the arm & head. As he is 81 it is feared it may go hard with them. Mr Sandison & Mr Mallet dined with us.
