9 July 1878 — Therapia | |
Tuesday. 9th [July 1878]. Worked & talked with “the M” till 12 when she & S went off to Candilli & on with Mrs A. Hanson to the Bazaars. Mukhtar P. called & as he wanted to return to town went down with them. After luncheon Henry & I went down to Hyssar in the 3 oared to call on Ahmet Vefyk P. whom we found at home as also his son Refyk Bey. Walked in the garden with him & got home after 7. The M & S. came in only in time for dinner. The Fourniers, Mrs Sandison, Mallet & Kennedy dined with us. Then came a telegram to say Sir S. Northcote had announced in the House that England has bought Cyprus & made a defensive alliance with Turkey as regards Asia. Fournier was terribly put out. This treaty is what has kept Henry so busy of late and I have had to copy all the letters & despatches on the subject & the treaty itself. It was so secret that Henry had not let it even be known in the chancery. We sat on the balcony. It was a beautiful night. | |
