16 August 1878 — Therapia
Friday. 16th August [1878]. I took a walk after breakfast with Henry. Painted at Aimée’s portrait. Dr Dickson came to luncheon. Wrote letters till 4½ in my bed room. Visit from Persian Ambassador. Drove with Genl Dickson to call on Mme Fournier who was just going out so we went on to the Khedive’s garden to the “Antelope” lawn tennis party. The Fourniers, Parnis, Fernan &c came. I only stayed abt ½ hour & then came home & studied Turkish & read & heard Jerry read. Mr Sandison dined with us. News that the Austrians had been beaten back in Bosnia. There is a story that Austria went to the porte to ask them to persuade the Bosnians to submit & that the answer they got was You say you occupy the country because we cannot govern it & now you want us to use our influence thereby showing that we alone can govern them.
