20 August 1878 — Therapia
Tuesday. 20th August [1878]. Wrote for messenger before breakfast. Had Turkish lesson. Afternoon rode with Henry, Mr Kennedy & Aimée. Went to Yeni-keui and explored a way home over the hills. Got home abt 6. Dressed & went in the 2nd caique with the Dolez & Mr Mallet to Buyukdéré to dine with Prince Labanoff. Met General Todleben, Zichy, the Russian Ambr, & a lot of Russian secys. Todleben kept us waiting a long time for dinner. A band played outside the room & made a deafening noise & made my head ache so that I could hardly touch any dinner. Almost the whole eveng I sat talking to Todleben, or at least he, to me. He was full of his wife & daughters and his chateau which he says every year he has a new building erecting & has just had a Bulgarian house & a mosque made to be ready for his return. At a little past a.m. we returned home.
