26 August 1878 — Therapia
Monday. 26th [August 1878]. Worked at Turkish the whole morng. The Salamis came up after luncheon bringing the Adl & Lady Hornby & 3 girls & Mr Winsloe. Just after lunch a lot of transports full of Russian troops passed & one with a band on board played God Save the Queen en passant & we waved our handkerchiefs to them in return. We were not sure whether it was politeness or bravado. We went & played lawn tennis with the Admiral & Mr Winsloe & had tea in the grove. Miss Blanche Bilinsky came to stay with us & arrived about 6. Abt 7 the Hornbys returned to the Salamis & came back in the eveng to our dance. We had a large party & the dancing was kept up till 12.30. We hear that abt 12,000 Russians left S. Stefano today. I had a long letter from Lady Somers telling all about poor Lady Henry Somerset’s miserable affair.
