17 September 1878 — Therapia
Tuesday. 17th September [1878]. Much better up early. Took Turkish lesson. Mr & Mrs Burr went off in steam launch to spend the day at Candilli. When my master was gone I went out on the terrace to paint & Mellony sat with me till lunch. Visits from Mme Herbert & Mme [illegible word]. At 5 o’cl: I had to dress to go to town to dine with Zichy who gave his great dinner to Hatzfeldt. At 5.30 Capt. Wingfield fetched us & put us on board the Petrel & we went down with the Fourniers, Dolez & Galvagna. It was a warm calm day. We landed at Top-khaneh & went up in an open carriage. All the Corps Dip & Mr & Mme [illegible word] dined. Mme C. was much admired & considered charming. She is very dark with good eyes blackened to bring them out but her features are nowhere. I shd call her a belle laide. At 10 we left & got safely on board by moonlight a calm eveng. 10 minutes after it began to rain & blow hard & we had a great thunderstorm. It was very dark & the Petrel went very slowly so that it was nearly one before we got home. In fear of spoiling my dress I took it off & left it on board and came in in my shawls &c. The steam launch met us & landed us all a happy thought of Capt. Wingfield’s but it was not easy to effect. It blew hard all night.
