1 October 1878 — Therapia
Tuesday. 1st October [1878]. Had Turkish lesson & then went up on pine terrace to join Mrs Burr painting & put the figures into our pictures. Lunched at one & then returned to work. Expected Pss Nazlie but she sent word she was ill. Played tennis. At 6 went out fishing. 3 small fish were caught but not by me. Came home to dinner. As we went by the Refugee’s house saw all the men in 2 rows under a tree saying their eveng prayer. It was very impressive their meeting there in the open air to pray to God in the sight of all. They all wore country dresses & the white turban & prayed aloud. Mr Mallet & Mr Smijth dined.
