24 October 1878 — Therapia
Thursday. 24th October [1878]. Before breakfast I had a great row with Jerry wh resulted in his being sent off to prison on board the “Antelope” altho’ he made piteous appeals to be let off. He flung himself on his knees kissed my hands, caught hold of my dress & said “I want to live with you & if I go to the Antelope I shall never come back. Excellence says so & he always speaks truth.” I said he might go & ask Excellence if he might return if he went to the Antelope quietly & Henry said it wd depend on what the Capt. said so he submitted & went off. Lord Donoughmore came to breakfast & then rode with May & Mrs Willie while I painted in the garden. After lunch Mr A. Hanson came & brought Mrs Ogilvy his brother’s widow to be introduced to me. A young & handsome woman with a terrible Smyrna accent. We played tennis. Afterwards May & I walked to the hotel to have tea with Sir Collingwood & Lady Dickson. Mrs Willie Hanson returned home. Mr Woodford, Arbuthnot & Mallet dined with us.
