22 November 1878 — Therapia
Friday. 22nd [November 1878]. Copied letters for Henry till 11. Mrs A. Hanson came to lunch—also Col. Hume & Caratheodory P. before he starts as Govr of Crete. Mrs. Newman called to tell me all abt the Jewish girl she is supposed to have adbucted. It appears the father brought the girl to Mrs N. saying he was divorced from his wife & wanted her to educate the girl. He signed a contract leaving her for 4 years. At the end of the 4 years her mother came & fetched her away. She went with her mother well dressed & happily but saying she would not live with her mother but wd return to Mrs Newman. At the end of 3 months the girl suddenly came back to Mrs Newman in rags & looking miserable. She said she had been so ill treated by her people she cd stand it no longer. They had insisted on marrying her to a Jew she did not know. She had stoutly refused & they had even tried to ruin her character by shutting her up in a room with the man. At last one day the girl seeing the door open fled—& took refuge in the Scotch mission house & was taken from there back to Mrs Newman. After remaining some time with Mrs Newman she left her & went to join a brother turned Christian who lives in Switzerland. This is Mrs Newman’s story. Mrs & Col. Blunt called– Went out & played tennis a little while. Had to have a long talk with May about her plans– To tell her Mrs Willie Hanson cd not keep her this winter & advised her to go home in the spring. She cried & said she would do as I advised—& I was very sorry for her poor thing having no home.
