4 December 1878 — Constantinople
Wednesday. 4th [December 1878]. Wrote for the messenger bag—copied for Henry. The Adl arrived from Artaki. Pss Nazlie came to spend the afternoon with me & allowd Adl Hornby & Henry to come & talk to her. A good deal of excitement in the town owing to a change of Ministry. Safvet P. goes out & Hayreddin P. becomes Grand Vizier, & Caratheodory P. Minister for Foreign Affairs. There was a report in town that it was done by the Sultan to annoy England & spite Henry, who, on the contrary was much pleased as the new Ministry is very liberal. Hayreddin P. tho’ almost a foreigner being a Tunisian has written many very liberal books & it is the first time the Minister for F.A. has been a Christian.
