5 December 1878 — Constantinople
Thursday. 5th [December 1878]. Mrs Willy Hanson called in the morng. Mr Winter came to stay with us. I drove out in the afternoon with the Admiral Hornby. We went down to Fundukli expecting to find a boat there from the Brassey’s yacht. After waiting some time we were joined by Mr Foster, Lady Thomas & her child and a boat fetched us & we were taken on board the “Sunbeam.” It was squally & we were glad to get on board between showers. We found the saloon crowded with all kinds of people amongst them Turkish ladies in yashmaks & feraces who turned out to be Pss Nazlie & her sister Pss Aziza & her mother in law Mme Kiazim B. & they had several people with them & Pss Aziza had her little boy of 3 who spoke English & French & was dressed like an English child. As soon as some of the crowd had gone Mrs Brassey showed me over the yacht wh is most comfortably fitted up with nursery’s &c & on the walls & ceilings of the saloon & deck cabin are hung up every kind of curiosity drawing, china, lace, corals &c &c in fact it was oppressive & made one want room to breathe. I returned on shore taking Mr Brassey to see Henry & dress at our house. Went home & laid down till dinner—the rolling & fatigue having given me a headache. We had to dinner the Brasseys, Hobart P., Adl Hornby, Mr Winsloe, Mr Smijth & the General. By dint of eating nothing & taking a little champagne I got better & was able to go to Ct Zichy’s in the eveng. We took the Brasseys there. As there was dancing we did not stay long.
