12 December 1878 — Constantinople
Thursday. 12th December [1878]. Sewed in the morng. Afternoon went out in the sedan chair to pay visits & found both Mme Raab & Mrs Whitaker at home– Henry & May & I went to dine at Zichys—a dinner in honor of the Spanish Minister. Mme Mantilla was very resplendent & decolleté & quite sleeveless & whitened & covered with diamonds & in fact was the regular rich Cuban & a subject of great astonishment to all but ourselves. She was very much pleased with herself and with Baron Galvagna who made up fiercely to her at dinner—& once she called loudly in a patronising tone to her host across the table “You shall give me a camelia by & bye, for they are magnificent!” All the eveng she sat by me & talked & laughed loudly. She is very vulgar & goodnatured & her old husband somewhat jealous.
