18 January 1879 — Constantinople
Saturday. 18th January [1879]. Cut out for refugees. Miss Lebet called abt the Dorcas concert we want to give with excuses from Dusach that he cd not help. Did not go out– Wrote– Mr Mallet returned from Aleppo & brought me as a present 2 fine cats. He & the Dicksons & Mr Smijth dined with us. Just after dinner we heard screams & I ran and caught Hill running abt wildly so I knew the house must be on fire. I calmed her down & found out that Orchard had set fire to the curtains in Mays room– On examination it was found not to be serious as the flames had been at once put out. I then put Hill to bed with Mme Joubert’s help & afterwards turned my attention to Orchard who was ludicrous in her fright—turning her head & hands about wildly & saying “Let me leave the house at once! Ah dear what shall I do! I must make Miss Boyd’s bed!” &c I got her up to her room & to bed & then returned to entertain Lady Dickson & have tea & be calm before bed time.
